Backup fails with unhelpful error message when output directory does not exist #8702

Open sjbach opened 10 months ago

Qubes OS release

4.2 rc3

Brief summary

If the output directory set earlier in the "Backup directory or command:" field doesn't exist, the backup process will fail to launch, with an error popup. This failure occurs several seconds after clicking the concluding Next on the "You're about to perform the following actions:" step (long enough to have switched away into another workspace, missing the error).

Popup:

[Dom0] Backup error ERROR: Writing backup to VM [vm] failed: [ OK ]

Notably, the popup doesn't display the cause of the error.

Steps to reproduce

Enter a non-existent directory name into the "Backup directory or command:" field, then click through the rest of the steps of the tool.

(In my case the field had defaulted to a directory I'd selected in the prior backup, which had since been deleted.)

Expected behavior

An error telling the user the specified backup directory does not exist- or at least offers a better clue of what might have gone wrong.

Actual behavior

A lagged error telling the user the backup has failed, nonspecifically

Since you specifically mentioned the GUI tool, does that mean the CLI doesn't exhibit this problem?

It appears CLI gives the same error:

Backup error: Writing backup to VM [vm] failed:
