New Tab Replication is out of control - You can't stop the New Tab + Loop #66

Closed tapco1 closed 10 years ago

tapco1 commented 10 years ago

I Download the FOB ad on and I started to have a unique problem.

I opened Firefox with the ad on enabled and a New tab+ was created without me doing anything. Then it happened over and over. More then 300 New tabs were created before I could shut Firefox down. Needless to say Firefox has been uninstalled from my Computer. This problem only started after I added FOB!!!

Quicksaver commented 10 years ago

Where did you download it from? There are apparently a few versions of a malicious add-on that uses the id of TFOB to disguise itself. I wonder if that could be it. Otherwise it's definitely a bug but we'll get to that if it is.

Quicksaver commented 10 years ago

And what version was it?

tapco1 commented 10 years ago

I always download software from the Manufacturer. I downloaded Firefox 30 from The Mozilla Download site. My OS is Windows Vista. I have two other browsers - ( Chrome and IE) - I have not have any problems with them. I run Malwarebytes and my computer is adware/maleware clean. My main Virus Utility is System Mechanic Pro,sSystem Shield. No problems running both of them

Thanks, Tom Peca

I meant the add-on, what website exactly did you download it from and what version has it installed (what version does it report in the add-on manager)? I know that this seems like an obvious question, but I just want to make sure because, like I said, there are some unwanted (unofficial) versions roaming around unfortunately.

Quicksaver commented 10 years ago

Especially because the add-on doesn't interfere with the new tab routines at all, so it's very suspicious that it is doing so.

tapco1 commented 10 years ago

Originally I downloaded FOB from the site recommended/linked by Firefox. Update - I reloaded Firefox 30 from the Mozilla site again but I didn't add FOB. The problem reappeared. So maybe it's a firefox problem?

Well, if you didn't add the add-on, that's a possibility.

You said that it opens "New Tab +" tabs. Does that mean that you have an add-on called "New Tab Plus" installed? If so, uninstall it and restart firefox (and if it still reappears after restarting the browser, you may have to completely clean out your firefox profile, but let's hope it doesn't come to that).

"New Tab Plus" was recently (just yesterday!) blocked by mozilla, for going against their guidelines, for performing actions against the user's knowledge and for having components that can be seen as adware. If you do have this add-on installed, I really recommend you remove it. There are other (better) alternatives already that provide the same functionality, including firefox's own native new tab, which has been getting better over the last few releases and will continue to improve still over the next few months.

Let me know if that's what's causing you trouble.

I never added a New Tab Ad On. Picture this - You open Firefox and a New Tab is created automatically then another one and another and never stopping, just stringing out these new tabs. Like some kind of a program loop. I tried everything to make it stop but it kept on going. I finally had to shut down my computer. It was really crazy!!!

Have you tried opening the add-ons manager and disabling all the add-ons you have, to see if one of them is causing this issue?

tapco1 commented 10 years ago

I have Uninstalled Firefox and I do not have the tab creation loop problem anymore. I am strictly using Chrome now. I was also having problems with Firefox and another issue (Adobe Flash Player). Out of site out of mind.Bye Bye Firefox !!!

I'm sorry to hear that, I would have wanted to help you fix your issue, if only to know what was happening for future reference. But since that's the case, I guess that won't matter.

tapco1 commented 10 years ago

Luis Miguel, If anything problems happen in the Future, I will contact you. For now I will not be using Firefox until it gets to at least level 35. Even at that point I will not be using any additional Ad-Ons for the browser. Thanks for your help L. M. I am retired now but when I was working it was in the IT World for 40 years. From programmer to systems manager to Major Project leader Consultant to Senior Vice President for one of the Largest IT Consulting firms in the US. My Largest project was for GE. I had over 600 consultantsworking on a IMS DB Order Entry System. They still use the system 20 years later. I keep my PC system very clean with the help of System Mechanic Pro. I have tried many PC Utilities over the years but none of them even compare to Sys Mech Pro. It has been a big part of my Software Utility arsenal for over 10 years and it keeps getting better. It is even rated #1 in it's utility class for over 7 years. Check it out!!! Thanks Again, Tom P.
