Kobo mini - Error code 3 when updating from version 1.5 #3

Hello there,

I'm updating a kobo mini from version 1.5 to version 1.7 and I'm having a Inkbox crash - Error code 3. Any tips on this upgrade ?

Thanks

Hello, Thanks for using InkBox! Important (maybe it isn't well-documented though), you need to update sequentially to 1.6 before jumping to any other version. So reset via Diagnostics (power on, then slide the power button a couple of times when the green light gets blinking until you see a "Diagnostics and recovery" splash screen) and update first to 1.6, then to 1.7. It should work. Feel free to report back any other issues if you happen to stumble upon one during that reset/update process.

Hello again @tux-linux

I reset the device via Diagnostics in order to create a bigger user partition ( I was using the default 64mb then I moved to 256mb - Just for my curiosity: is there any reason why 128mb is not available ? ) Then I copied the following file:

http://pkgs.kobox.fermino.me/bundles/inkbox/native/update/1.6/n905c/inkbox-update-1.6.upd.isa

to InkBox/.inkbox . The same place where can_update and can_really_update are and then I rebooted the device and I got a Failed to update InkBox. ( The digital signature of the update is untrusted. For security reasons, it cannot be installed).

Am I doing something wrong or do I have to proceed with another kind of reset before this updates ?

Thanks for your quick response and awesome work !

Did you copy the two update files at the same time? This is needed for it to work. Read the instructions in the update how-to specific for 1.6: http://pkgs.kobox.fermino.me/bundles/inkbox/native/update/1.6/HOWTO-Update

Also, you copied the wrong file, because your Kobo is a Mini i.e. n705, not n905c which is the Touch C. The message was right, because the digital signature is different for each device. Good luck and please report back how it goes!

Hey it's working!! Thank you. I installed the stock 1.5, then the 2 files from 1.6 then the 1.7. Now I have to learn how to set the WiFi on that :-)

Thanks for your help and all the effort on top of this project.

tux-linux commented 2 years ago

Hello, unfortunately due to kernel issues, WiFi is not available on that model, nor is it on the N905C and N613. You can SSH to the device via USBNet though, and setup internet with a bridge

No problem, hopefully one day will work :-)

Hi tux-linux Could you probably help me? I got stuck and running around in loops in updating my Kobo Mini (N705) higher than 1.5 or 1.6. One time I managed to upgrade from 1.5 to 1.6 by entering in maintenance mode and using the soft reset menu. After that, I tried to update to 1.7 but always ended up in staying on 1.6 or sadly falling back to 1.5. Isn't it possible that you create a newer version, 1.8 or 1.9 which I can flash directly on the micro SD card?

Now I tried it again, flashed 1.5, copied both 1.6xxx to .inkbox folder, rebooted, power button game until maintenance mode, soft reset, let everything happen on display and after the device booted, About InkBox is still showing 1.5.

Any ideas or suggestions? Many thanks Jochen

That sounds great, thanks a lot in advance :-) Jochen

Good news :-) I managed it to upgrade to 1.9. I changed the 16 GB Sandisk Ultra to an Industrial Grade Sandisk 16 GB and after that, everything worked smooth. Stupid question, WiFi is not working yet, correct? As I would like this device in my outside Weatherstation to show a website with weather data. Thanks again Jochen

from my knowledge it is not you can help fix it, if you have some knowledge about linux - linux kernel. Or just use the usb bridge
