An ecologist we were talking to took 5-second sub-samples every 10 minutes from their audio data and used that as an audio track to play against a long-duration false-colour spectrogram.
This is a pretty neat idea as it allows a user to "fast-forward" through the audio without the associated distortion normally associated with an enhanced playback speed.
The sampling rate could be configurable. The 5 / 600 playback rate is an effective 120× playback rate.
