Juvenile Inventory: Elements of Vertebrae #98

Vertebral Centra

Where, for adult individuals, vertebral bodies are scored, the juvenile inventory targets the centra.

Some anatomical sources understand 'body' and 'centrum' as interchangeable terms. Others see the vertebral body being composed of the centrum and the vertebral arch. This understanding seems to be adopted by the Foundatioal Model of Anatomy (FMA) which offers the class 'Central part of body of vertebra' as a 'regional part' of some 'body of vertebra'.

@JEB13, @hayesleigh, @elizabethhannigan: What is your understanding of the centrum?

a) Is the centrum a regional part of the vertebral body and exists both in juvenile and adult individuals? a.1) Is the vertebral body exclusive to adults, after centrum and arch are fused? b) Does the centrum evolve into the vertebral body and is absent in adults?

These questions are relevant for creating the respective ROIs and for defining equivalent terms from the FMA.

Once this is settled, add data fields for scoring vertebral centra to the juvenile inventory analogous to fields about vertebral bodies in the adult inventory.

Left/Right Fragments

The adult inventory includes a data field that takes numbers for 'Left frag.' and 'Right frag.' the ROIs in AnthroGraph are 'Entire left part of vertebra' and 'Entire right part of vertebra'.

During a meeting on 19 September 2023, @cuboideum, @hayesleigh and @elizabethhannigan agreed that these could also be used for the data fields '#Left neural arch frag.' and '#Right neural arch frag.'.

@JEB13, do you agree?

Unsided Fragments

Unlike the adult inventory, the juvenile inventory has a data field '#Unsided frag.' for vertebrae in general. This counts fragments, for which it cannot be determined from which bone and which part of bone they stem. The field was added because juvenile skeletons can be highly fragmented which creates the need for a general category.

Sacrum

As the sacrum is not fused in juveniles, new ROIs need to be created for the unfused elements.

In a meeting between the Phaleron Bioarchaeological Project and the RDFBones/AnthroGraph workgroup on 21 September 2023 this issue was discussed and it was clarified that the centrum in juvenile individuals evolves into the vertebral body in adults.
