Update: setting the OCL_ICD_VENDORS variable explicitly makes the problem go away:

@bluescarni, do you have multiple OpenCL platforms linked to LLVM statically? You might have to hide the LLVM symbols using -Wl,--exclude-libs,ALL
@isuruf I don't really know, I am using gentoo's package for ROCm. I have relayed your question to the gentoo devs:
After upgrading the rocm stack from 2.7 to 2.9, any opencl application that I try fails with the following assertion failure:
I am using the rocm packages for gentoo linux. The issue has been reported on the gentoo bugtracker as well:

rocm 2.7 worked fine.
Any hint on how to further debug the issue? I can recompile the code with patches if necessary.
