3D Dot Game Heroes random freezing #4433

as of latest release 6649. random crashing when loading new areas or dialog screens with npcs system spec: windows 10 64bit xeon 1281 v3 16gb ddr3 gtx 1050 ti i am new to this so if you need more info or anything let me know.

Still happens in 0.0.5-7732 The game closes abruptly but the emulator doesn't freeze or crash.

Anybody know which version is the last working one? I'm 99% sure this is a regression.

still crashes randomly on 7972 here is a new log. hopefully someone can tell us why its happening other than that runs full speed RPCS3.log.gz

@EmoryM Dude, at least try to hide it. You won't get support here for pirated copies, mostly just because they have more issues, but also because youknowwhat.

Has mine or other logs been looked at? Just wondering after a year why this game freezes

There's nothing obvious on the logs posted above that indicates why this is freezing Pretty sure it has to be debugged to figure out exactly what's happening These kind of core issues take time to fix as the cause isn't usually easy to find

Who would have to debug it? I'm willing to add a bounty Only because this game was only released on PS3 and other wise runs pretty well. Let me know if I can help

Sorry if my log file put this project in jeopardy. FWIW I've owned the game for 10 years but didn't bother putting an optical drive in this PC. No idea how to check if I have a bad copy, CRC32s of the BLES00875 directory are 00857385 (data) and 45B312B1 (data+names.) If I can do anything to help just let me know.

I hope you tested on 0.0.7-8987-ed0c25f7. Because 0.0.7-8986-ec1ea466 was broken (and fixed an hour later) build went up only minutes ago.

well decided to boot up today on 008-9371 and no crashes after 30min of play when it and out of areas, doors etc which would always cause a crash and couldnt get it to crash. log attached. would love to know what changed if someone could compare this log to an older one. really been waiting for this game to be playable for awhile. will play more and see if crashes develop RPCS3.log.gz

got a freeze crash after trying to collect the first palace orb. also water in temple was too sparkling like artifacts. log attached. RPCS3.log.gz

Tried running the game with Accurate RSX reservation access turned on. Still crashes upon entering a new area after playing for a while. RPCS3.log.gz

009-10173 no crash after collecting the first palace orb. water effects are fixed too. will play more before getting to excited :)

This was fixed by #7846, makes sense the graphics are fixed as well.

Not sure if this is the same issue but I just had the game crash when attempting to start game. RPCS3.log.gz

make sure your setting in config are the default. and are you on the vulkan backend? what version are you running?

Default settings. I've tried on OpenGL and Vulkan both crash. Tested on 0.0.9-10246 RPCS3.log.gz

Just tested with 0.0.10-10406. Was able to play for a good hour but then it crashed.

Just tested with v0.0.11-10647. Game crashed same as always but the error looked a little different. Not sure if anything has changed? RPCS3.log.gz

Tested with latest version (v0.0.11-10669) was able to play for 2+ hours with no crash. Could this have possibly been fixed by a recent change? RPCS3.log.gz

The crash just happened after a few mins of gameplay, but this time I had the Resolution Scale set to 150% RPCS3.log.gz

Could just be a coincidence but it did run for the longest time without a crash when I had everything (including resolution scale) set to default.

confirmed, still crashing randomly when changing screens in 2021-02-18 please someone fix, this is one of the best ps3 games and unique to the system ...

I just tried using Strict Rendering Mode on 17-12437-770a607b Alpha and it didn't help - still crashed within 15 minutes.

Yep, its unreasonably impossible to finish the game in this state, as the probability of a random crash seems to increase based on the number of scene transitions. A long dungeon that has you transitioning up and downstairs many times is almost guaranteed to crash.

Additional things I've tried that don't help:

I wish someone with knowledge to look at why this game crashes would help. This issue is over 3yrs old and the game cant be played anywhere else.

There are no actual emulator crashes listed here, those were fixed years ago. What I think most people are talking about here is that the game is freezing (logical desync) and the game simulation stops. The emulator has not crashed. Those red messages in the log window are not crashes, crashes are purple in color and stop the game for you without action from the user. Red text means something unexpected happened but that is normal behavior that happens on a real PS3 as well. For example CELL_ENOENT means a file is missing from the installation, but this happens all the time and is not unusual. While attempting to open a file that does not exist is not good, this is expected behavior for the OS to refuse to open something which is not there. Of course people will need to validate that their installs are valid, but it is also possible that the missing files were deleted by the game developer before distribution. CELL_PAD_ERROR_NO_DEVICE - plug in a controller/pad. etc

So, what's the difference between crashing and hanging/freezing? Well, the approach taken to solve the situation will be drastically different, especially when it comes to the amount of time it will take. In the meantime I will change the title to reflect this situation, but I would advice that someone attach a desktop recording of the issue because the logs seem to not say much.

On a related note: please attach your TTY.log files if filling in data for the report. I am not actively looking into this issue, but from some logs here I can see the game writing things to the TTY console and seems to have failed some kind of internal check and tried to kill itself, but this is only from a quick glance.

kd-11 thank you for taking a look at it. I am willing to add to the bounty. From your stand point, how much would it take for you to take a good look at this? I know its not a demon souls or persona game but this is software that cannot be played or was ever issued on another platform. Let me know.

Thanks for the offer, but I would prefer if someone else could look at this. Games that have problems with deadlocks can take a long time to debug, while at the same time our patreon supporters are expecting me to fix the currently open 70+ bugs that we still have and that would be unfair to them. If anyone is willing to give it a go, feel free to contact the dev channel on our discord, you can get some help to get started debugging.

For now what I understand the additional information being requested is the TTY.log with the rpcs3.log to be capable for whomever is investigating to investigate the information fully.
