As a Student, I'd like to see examples to compare my potential monthly loan payments to, so that they are in a context I can relate to. #177

Need to find a source for an average monthly car payment or rent or salary.

@saintsoup52 -- where did you guys find data for this on the paying for college tool?

saintsoup52 commented 9 years ago

We borrow data from IPEDS (quarterly) and the financial shopping sheet data ED publishes annually (grad, CDR and median borrowing).

Apologies! I meant when you had textbooks and car payments

saintsoup52 commented 9 years ago

Our examples were a little lame (textbooks and something else)... I think we consider "smart phones", "tablets" and "gallons of gas".

The exercise was to find something that future college students knew the value of and would be aspirational in some way.

@LisaGee @saintsoup52 @ErieMeyer we accounted for this in the original designs, but I believe it was deprioritized for the MVP.

Here's the design mock-up of this section. Happy to crate new icons for other comparative metrics once those have been determined!

I think the outstanding issue is that we need to find a source that we can use for comparison. Something that will show us current price of a phone, car or dinner for 2. I think that’s what Erie was looking for? Maybe?

We spent a lot of calories trying to figure out what made the most sense here…

I think we considered using:

· Smart Phones

· Tablets

· Gallons of Gas

· Plane flights

· Rent

@LisaGee @ErieMeyer -- let me know what measurements (and ideally the final language for each item) you want to go with and then I can devise the appropriate icons.

ErieMeyer commented 9 years ago

That was right -- was looking for a comparable consumer good and knew that CFPB had done a ton of research/calories around this. Seeing this, I think our best bet post-launch would be "gallon of gas," but I think consumer testing the target audience with mocks would be needed.
