  1. Instead of/in addition to the median, show quantiles (25%, 50%, 75%) and more granularly describe relationship to the median, e.g.: "way below average", "about average", "way above average".
  2. Use color to indicate "good" and "bad" values, rather than category of chart. This has some problems, but it's worth considering.

Re: 2., I am guessing one of the issues Shawn is thinking of is that for accessibility reasons we should not solely use color to indicate anything important on the site. But, if we also use words (or some other non-color mechanism) in addition to color, it is interesting to think about whether switching to 'color meaning good or bad' in the bar charts is a clear design choice.

Well, another thing to consider is that for some meters above average is "good", and for some below average is "good". So if we colored them by their relationship to the average then you could end up with two meters side by side that have the same color but different bar/line orientations.
