Fix #49, #48, #47 (at least, if not others) #50

This fixes issues in #49, #48 and #47 I believe. Simple encode/decode issues when the conversion from python2 to python3 was done. I've tested this locally on a Brother DCP-L2550DW.

Note: I didn't eradicate this across other paths. It's probable that USB etc. still have this issue.
