Commercial flights have traditionally flown in the troposphere only. But this is changing now and going forward. Thus, the term "commercial aircraft" and its implied "commercial flight" will not be as useful a descriptor. Perhaps we need a term like "troposphere aircraft".
Discussed in RBO call on 8/18/22 and it was agreed that the new term should be "tropospheric aircraft" and/or "troposphere aircraft."
Dan to talk to Rich Keller about how this might have been handled in aeronautics research ontology he worked on.
Wherever we end up Jack wants 'commercial aircraft' to be a class
The ATM and equipment ontologies that Rich Keller developed with Aeronautics directorate at Ames aren't grounded in BFO and don't really have commercial but they do have "aircraft". Jack to review these ontologies and see if they have other concepts of interest for RBO and then we should decide whether to use them or not.
How do I review those two ontologies?
Dan to invite Rich to come talk about ATM ontology and how RBO might use it.
Add "suborbital" as child of 'outer space' @jmskip
i think we have to discuss the atomic steps we want to take here, unclear from issue. adding discussion tag
SNOMED has commercial fixed-wing aircraft http://purl.bioontology.org/ontology/SNOMEDCT/40353003
Discussed. Consider moving these subtypes to SLSO, together with other spacecraft types mentioned in other issues. These craft often research microgravity effects, and parabolic craft hardly ever study radiation effects.
More of a GeneLab specific problem but listing here for the sake of organization.
"commercial aircraft" is listed as a possible input for "vehicle" for high altitude/parabolic flights in the GeneLab curation menu but does not exist in RBO or any other ontology on BioPortal. All of the other possible inputs for this column are shown below (all are subclasses of "aircraft"). SNOWMEDCT has a class 'Commercial fixed-wing aircraft' that we could import but it lacks a definition so we probably don't want to do that. The group should decide if we need this term and then we can fix the menu.
Existing possible inputs for 'vehicle' for high altitude flights: high-altitude balloon parabolic flight aircraft uncrewed aerial vehicle commercial aircraft ??? high altitude research aircraft balloon aircraft
