I would like to see a dictionary API. We have long awaited its delivery and
Google by
far is doing 80-90% of the functionality we are looking for.

When will this be available?

Hi, from France, it sould be the next major google priority if they want to
grow.
i'm not a good developper, but a linguist user... i've a business plan for this
hard
work. ( not word by word translation wich is unusable) and the way to correct
this
translation is not well implemented yet in google. google has to federate the
users
being able to do this job, and give them special status and label.
Sentences are very Country & culture specifics.
Technical,oral, slang, need consideration.

There are APIs for Google Maps and basic word translation. Why not for
Dictionary
support? This would be a very valuable feature for our online training tool.

I'd be very keen to retrieve web definitions too (i.e. as for the "define:"
keyword).
My application is a web interface that helps people identify plants. The
descriptions
have a lot of technical terms and it'd be very useful to get definitions that
complement images.

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Me too! :-)
What I'd like to do is create a simple application -- maybe a bookmarklet --
that
acts as an aid for reading text in a second language. It shows a web page with
rollover pop-ups, much like Google Translate, but with the "from" and "to"
languages
reversed: the web page is displayed in the original ("from") language, and only
shows
translations when you hover the mouse over a word (or selected phrase).
This is very valuable when you are learning a second language, and you have a
basic
reading knowledge but need help with vocabulary every now and then.
The Google Translate API could be used for phrases, but a dictionary API would
be
useful for individual words, especially when the translation is off-base.

May be this will help: rosita.googlecode.com

It's like a dictionary and memorizing exercises generator (flashcards), that
fetches
google dictionary in a rough way (html scraping).

Some works must be done to improve it, but it already works in most parts.

Thanks. ciao.

Tony.

Tony,
Unfortunately scraping is not legal.
Possible legal alternatives is like using dictd client (dict.org ) by ex. this
http://aspnetresources.com/tools/dictionary.aspx

But anyway Google Dictionary API will be great to have !

Access to the Google dictionary would be a useful addition to the API. I would
also like to see pronunciation with
the Chinese character side of the translation.

Even being able to get grammatical information about individual words
(identifying
parts of speech) would be amazing for a language learning appengine app I'm
working on.
