Add proper types for exceptions #79

Start work on issue #76. I think it makes sense to work on this incrementally so this is just the beginning.

Stated moving over the channel exception types now. There's more work needed here...

My suggestion now would be: I'll test-drive this branch for some time now to see if any major problems arise. If not, I'll get it merged and we can continue chipping away at this incrementally. I want to release all the changes that have accumulated in the last months soon - it would be nice to get at least this part of the work in before that.
