Discussion topic.

Utilizing an item from a flying, challenging enemy presents a path to renewing a desirable item and creating additional engaging gameplay experiences - even if it is constructing some wither farm. Nether stars are an underutilized end game item. Elytra are a highly utilized, nonrenewable end game item.

If elytra are too cheap to produce, the following concerning playstyles and play effects occur:

To transition to new format:

What item(s) do you want to add a recipe for? Elytra

What worktable does it use (crafting table, furnace, ect)? Crafting Table

what items should go into the recipe? Why? Nether Star - increase difficulty of obtaining the item and provide additional use for wither drops Phantom Membrane Feather String

Describe a possible crafting recipe

phantom membrane nether star phantom membrane
phantom membrane leather chestplate phantom membrane
feather string feather

Please describe some reasoning for the item(s) to be craftable and what the recipe adds to the game Why does this item need to be craftable? What does it add? How does it affect gameplay?

Elytra are already craftable in this datapack but currently use eyes of ender and popped chorus fruit in the recipe. Once the dragon is defeated in server events, this makes elytra accessible as an earlier/midgame item.

Proposed Recipe crafting-grid(3)

Example Feedback: Currently this recipe does not include anything from the end. Do we want to remove the end connection with this recipe/allow access before gaining access to the end?

I think the recipe should still include popped chorus fruit, as this still requires the player base to have beaten the end dragon, or at least visited the end using an ender chest.

crafting-grid(2)

I like that this recipe give more use to both phantom membrane and nether stars which are both under utilized.

I see the point about end connections, but popped chorus fruit is something I have a hard time seeing as a component providing lift. I can however see the chorus flower being mixed in with feathers to provide lift - these are at the top of chorus plants, which begs the question of how these plants reproduce. I posit that pollination happens by the the self-fertilization of the flowers given that these may be planted to produce an entirely new plant. There is no rain or pollinator animal in the End dimension, which implies that the flowers themselves must glide to the location of the new plants.

phantom membrane leather chestplate phantom membrane
feather string feather

This recipe proposes that the chorus flower is used for the leading edge of the wing as flight secondaries, and retains the use of feathers for flight primaries.

Currently elytra is uncraftable. The cause of this is the craftable_elytra.json file missing a closing curly brace and has a type of "minecraft:crafting_shaped". Changing the type to "crafting_shaped" and adding the brace makes the item craftable in game again.

After discussing with @mjsonofharry, I will be changing the string to beeswax when I fix this recipe. The recipe may be changed again in the future depending on how the discussions about including feather in the recipe go.
