Short and incomplete descriptions of a problem that is also missing examples
and suggested solution is not the best way to get a feature implemented.
Please add as much detail as possible.

I think I know what thw original poster wants:
when I convert an ebook with calibre this markup is added for the cover image,
which will resize the output to the currently visible space and keeps the
aspect ration of the image:

<svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" height="100%"
preserveAspectRatio="xMidYMid meet" version="1.1" viewBox="0 0 445 616"
width="100%" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">
      <image height="616" width="445" xlink:href="../Images/cover.jpeg"></image>

It would be great if one could add this markup to an exisiting image with a
keystroke or via the context menu of an image!

This is too specialized to have a specific button/key to insert, edit at this
time. It could possibly be done by a clipboard type mechanism, but his is
another issue still to be investigated.
