Restore Desktop Configuration doesn't work #340

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Phone: ZTE Blade
OS: CM7 Nightly 07152011

How to reproduce:
Backup the settings and desktop configuration.
Clean re-installation of the OS
Restore the setting and desktop configuration.

What happens:
It says successfully restored, but only settings are restored not the desktop
configuration which contains all my icons :(

Is there any possibility that the restore doesn't work when it doesn't find all
the applications that were in the system before(when i did the backup)?

Because after clean install i didn't install some applications.

I checked adw_launcher.db, it is seems fine contains list of all apps that were
in my desktop when i made the backup.

That would be the case. You need to have the applications installed before
doing a desktop restore.

wouldn't it be a great addition to the application,
like checking whether app is present in the phone or not and then placing the
icon in home screen.
I saw another issue(#24) which said widgets cannot be loaded, so may be the
application can check widgets and skip them while restoring the configuration.
Just a thought

It would be helpful if it indicated that there was a problem during the
restore, and what the problem was. An eventual enhancement to partially
restore the rest of the items would be nice, but the current behavior of
reporting success while doing nothing seems more like a bug than a missing
feature. Thanks!

Installed all applications, and tried to restore the desktop and it did Not
work. Only reason I'm using ADW is for the desktop restore functionality; how
ironic.

I tried to save the configuration, remove just one shortcut and restore the
configuration.
Doesn't work...

This has never worked for me. I am running a Captivate. I went from stock
without ADW, to stock with ADW, then 2 or 3 ROMs before settling on
CyanogenMod. Every single time I tried backing up my desktop and restoring, and
not a single time, not for a single configuration or ROM or setup or anything,
did it work. It almost always said it was successful, but never was. Most times
I had all apps reinstalled.

This particular time I'm on CM7.1, and I am confident that I have the same apps
installed. I verified the timestamp and non-negligible file size when I created
the backup file. It just doesn't work. And as someone else mentioned, if it
weren't preinstalled on CM7 I would only use ADW for the backup/restore
functionality.

Also, shouldn't this be filed as a defect and not an enhancement?

If anyone's interested, I created a similar problem report (#363) that IS
listed as a defect and has a 'medium' priority. If folks will star it, it
might get more attention. Not trying to steal anyone's thunder but...
