Create language/history page #1000

This was outlined in #728, but there was no separate ticket for it.

Basically, the page should explain how we got to this point, perhaps with some discussion on why some things did not work as well as we wished (e.g. parrot).

Also, if you think that this kind of thing should not be in the documentation, please leave a comment. In that case the stuff on the glossary page will be simply removed.

-1 for including this on the docs site. I think a page on the perl6.org site might be a good idea, though.

coke commented 7 years ago

Can we get some votes on this from other contributors, either way?

AlexDaniel commented 7 years ago

I don't think any voting is needed at this particular moment. If somebody actually writes some stuff for this ticket, then we can look at the content and decide (vote, if you like) if it fits the documentation or not. If not, we will move it to perl6.org as you say, or maybe even somewhere else.

Like always, we can discuss our fantasies to death, and we can even move the ticket to another repo (maybe even back and forth!), but let's first have some draft to talk about.

coke commented 7 years ago

I disagree. I don't think the content belongs on this site. Having a draft if the concensus agrees is a waste of time.

Waste of what time? If it doesn't belong here, we will put it somewhere else. Yes, it will need to be reformatted a little bit, but we will waste much more time on getting the consensus about nothing than on reformatting the text…

coke commented 7 years ago

As I said. Let's get some other voices on this ticket. We've already had this discussion on other tickets.

OK. Let's make it very clear and easy then.

Having a single "Aye" vote after more than one year implies "motion dismissed"? Anyway, I've voted against now. I think that it would rather move somewhere else. Besides, we have the Perl 6 museum now, which would pretty much cover everything that page would do, and better.

Tyil commented 6 years ago

@JJ For what it matters, after reading through the ticket, I also cast my vote :)

I believe docs should be for documentation about the language Perl 6 and how to use it. perl6.org seem like a better fit for "everything about Perl 6" in general. This includes the history on how we got where we are today.

tisonkun commented 6 years ago

Yes, we now have perl6/museum-items

AlexDaniel commented 6 years ago

Yes. I think we can close this right now. See https://github.com/perl6/museum-items/ for further progress on this.
