Not removing apps from Start Menu #128

Closed issacs-tech closed 1 month ago

issacs-tech commented 2 months ago

I was running the script as always on new Windows 11 23H clean install and this time it did NOT remove any apps from the start menu it's the 1st time I see this happen it 09/08/2024 I did run the script again just for that option but it did NOT remive any apps again

Raphire commented 2 months ago

Heya,

Could you check if they're actually installed? It sounds like it's actually the issue explained here: #41. Some apps are not actually installed, they're just stubs in the start menu that will only install the app once you try to open them.

I haven't found a way yet to remove these individual app stubs from the start menu as they're not actually installed and the start menu file is a binary file that can't be (easily) edited.

Currently the only way for the script to remove them is to clear the start menu entirely, which is an option in the custom mode of the script.

issacs-tech commented 2 months ago

I being using this tool for awhile on many computers never had an issue I always use custom and choose what application to remove and then choose to remove pinned to start all I will check again

issacs-tech commented 2 months ago

Did again in custom and apps were not removed from pinned ? 20240908_191754 20240908_191701 20240908_191426

Heya,

Thanks for the additional info. I'll see if I can replicate this on my end.

Raphire commented 2 months ago

@issacs-tech It does seem to work on my machine, but I'll do some more in depth testing later today. Could you run the script again and share the script output? This should look something like this: image

Thanks!

Hi I'm using this tool on many computers and NEVER had that issue it's very weird the application are 100% installed Paint Notepad Chrome I click on them and they start that's why I contacted you also note that I used your tool right after fresh windows 11 install and complete win updates so nothing was there to prevent it's the 1st time experience may be you want we can do a remote or I can probably can reinstall windows if needed as I'm setting new laptop

It's interesting that it didn't work on a specific machine/installation. The script does check if the startmenu file already exists, maybe it didn't exist on that machine for some reason. Did you notice any errors in the script output?

Additionally, if you still have access to the machine. Could you check what startmenu files are there for the user? They're found at %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.StartMenuExperienceHost_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState

@issacs-tech Thanks for the additional info.

In that case I will close this issue for now, as it seems to be isolated to a specific machine/installation where something may've been messed up.

Please do open a new issue if you run into this problem again and have more info.

Yes Thanks will do

A guide for reverting changes can be found here: https://github.com/Raphire/Win11Debloat/discussions/114

Re-enabling home is pretty easy, Win11Debloat adds an option to the file explorer folder settings. (See guide above for details)

Probably best way is to create a bat file with the following command:

PowerShell -ExecutionPolicy Bypass -Command "& ([scriptblock]::Create((irm "https://win11debloat.raphi.re/")))"

This will start a powershell window and execute the command to download and run the script.
