Audio stutters when using Boom2device #101

When playing any video, if I am using the Boom2 audio device (my default, as the speakers on my iMac have gotten less loud), every couple of seconds the audio drops for a few frames (under a second, but noticeable. The logs show nothing happening during playback. When I switch audio output to the built-in, internal speakers mode (effectively bypassing the Boom2 app) the audio plays without errors.

The issue occurs no matter the skin. I tried with different video files of different resolutions and audio codecs with the same results. I just started using openPHT and this issue is a real problem for me, as the internal speakers are not loud enough for me to hear the audio clearly from 10 feet away, making the use of Boom2 irreplaceable.

Did this happen when using Plex Home Theatre 1.4.x?

peskat commented 8 years ago

No, that is why I bring this issue here. I use Boom2 mostly for Plex, since the sound is too low even when I turn it full app both from the Mac and the PHT (now OpenPHT) from 10+ feet away. Up until that time I had no issues with this PHT + Boom2 combo.

Ensure you have disabled passthrough, set number of channels to 2.0 and try different combos of the following video options:

Tried the above suggestions except A/V sync method which I couldn't locate either in the Preferences or in the settings available during playback. They don't make a difference, neither in the appearance nor the frequency of the issue. Also I just checked out a few other files and the problem occurs regardless of the audio stream type (I tried files with AAC, MP3 and AC3 5.1 audio).

Have been able to replicate this, however, use of a third party sound enhancer is outside the scope of this project, have you contacted the developers of Boom2. External sound cards work fine, as does HDMI. How do you connect your MacBook? to your TV?

peskat commented 8 years ago

I am on an iMac (late 2009 model 27") and I am using openPHT to use the computer itself as a HT, so no connections whatsoever.

I am puzzled however, as I thought that OpenPHT was based on the code of PHT, which had no problem with my setup. Anyway...

A lot of the old Frodo code has been replaced with Isengard/Jarvis code, so although it has the same, or in most respects, enhanced functionality it is now difficult to compare the two.

I am posting this issue with Boom as well. The issue exists for other users when pairing Boom2 with Kodi.

Looks like a Boom2 issue then, closing.

Just tested in next release 1.6.3, fixed for music playback, still an issue with video.
