macOS High Sierra and Apple Remote Up/down buttons do not work #270

Open iancd opened 6 years ago

iancd commented 6 years ago

In macOS High Sierra the up and down buttons do not work - Apple have mapped them to the volume.

Kodi Krypton has a fix for the Apple Remote issues in High Sierra. https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=322037

Can this fix be incorporated into a new version please?

iancd commented 6 years ago

Pull request to fix this is now waiting. Hope maintainer manages to get to this soon. https://github.com/RasPlex/OpenPHT/pull/272

dan-the-man-nz commented 6 years ago

its probably unlikely in at this point it will be, the dev is only focusing on v2 rewrite, you may want to see if you can workaround this issue yourself.

giro83 commented 6 years ago

Really? Spinning a new build which is essentially 1.8.0 but also fixes this issue is too hard and time consuming? The software is unusable on High Sierra. What is the ETA for v2.0? And how many users will move to KODI because of this?

iancd commented 6 years ago

Hey @renaudholcombe I was trying to build my own branch copy with your remote patch included but I struggled with the instructions which don't appear to be updated for High Sierra/Xcode #247 ? Any advice? Thanks.

larsjaas commented 6 years ago

Anyone have an unofficial build with this patch?

Swizam commented 6 years ago

Same issue here. Plex Media Player has it fixed in 2.5.0 ;) Would be great to have an OpenPHT 1.8.1 with that fix :P

Lukecro commented 6 years ago

Yes - I’m eagerly awaiting an openPHT 1.8.1 or 1.9 for Mac OSX with the fix for this issue... I’ve been delaying upgrading to High Sierra all year because of it. Many thanks in advance if we can get a little maintenance release soon while we wait longer term for OpenPHT 2.0....

And hopefully when the next Mac OS comes out later in the year it doesn’t break more OpenPHT goodness all over again ;)

Hope this helps someone trying to get a build of OpenPHT with support for macOS High Sierra. I have done some code changes to allow me to build the app on macOS Mojave. Though the build works for me, not sure whether it would work for the rest. Hence I have published the build instructions here: https://github.com/Kiran-B/OpenPHT/blob/openpht-1.9/README-BUILD-OpenPHT-macOS.md

Pre-built binary (macOS 64-bit) with fix for remote : https://github.com/Kiran-B/OpenPHT/releases/tag/v1.9.0.0-d5c3a6090

Works great! Thanks a lot!

Oh, wow, a blast from the past! Thanks for the update. I'd finally given up and left good 'ol OpenPHT behind for Plex Media Player "for macOS Home Theater PCs". I definitely still miss some of the OpenPHT features, but the current version of PMP is actually pretty good too, incorporates some of the best PHT elements while adding in their "recommendation" hubs, and they've allowed for some basic customizations. (Thank goodness they didn't follow through with their threat to end-of-life it; their alternative "Plex for Mac" web-based shenanigans doesn't stack up in comparison, at least in a home-theater-PC context.)

akrug commented 4 years ago

Haha, yeah I thought it was a shame no one replied, so I thought better late than never. The Plex Media Player seems good in almost all ways, except one, which is a dealbreaker for me. When you press up or down on the apple remote control while playing video, it skips forward or backwards instead of controlling the volume. So with only the apple remote at hand, there's no way to quickly control the volume.

akrug commented 4 years ago

Also, I might imagine this, but I think Plex Media Player makes the fans of my 2009 iMac work harder than OpenPHT does.

Hi all

Yesterday I moved from my late 2009 macmini to a mid 2011 one and upgraded from El Capitan to High Sierra. Before the upgrade, I was using OpenPHT with PMS and Harmony Hub for years with no issues. Since yesterday, I experienced the up/down (and quite many other buttons not working) issue with my remote.

I downloaded the pre-built binary from @Kiran-B but nothing changed. I just wanted to make sure that:

  1. this fix is about harmony remotes as well, or just apple
  2. Other people that finally fixed the issue with this built, didn't do anything else.

Thank you

Kiran-B commented 3 years ago

@alehandroGr I use Harmony 650 and the remote works with the pre-built binary from my repo.

If the remote isn't working after the upgrade, could you try below:

  1. Quit OpenPHT.
  2. Delete '~/Library/Application Support/OpenPHT/PlexHTHelper'.
  3. Relaunch OpenPHT.

Note: I also have the latest version of https://www.iospirit.com/labs/candelair/ installed. There was one update meant for High Sierra specifically. In case you do not have the latest version installed, update it before attempting the 3 steps above. This udpate may need a reboot of your Mac.

@Kiran-B, thank you for the tips! I'll try that tonight!

@Kiran-B , I tried what you suggested. I tried many other things on top of it but unfortunately since the moment I deleted PlexHTHelper, both Mac and OpenPHT don't react on any remote commands. I made some progress with remote buddy but still it seemed very limited and buggy. I finally made it work by pairing the remote with my Mac using Bluetooth. To do that, I had to create a new Apple Media Player device (and activity). Some commands are missing but nothing essential.
