an openstreetmap bg layer

"+1 Me too!", definitely.

More usefully: open-gpstracker can't be used online for working on OpenStreetMap
without this: since every layer right now is Google-derived, you can't lay down
traces while tiles are on-screen without violating Google's TOS and potentially
the
map data provider's copyright :( I think I'm right in assuming that offline use
of
open-gpstracker is legally OK, but it would certainly be nice to see progress
made
against the current map when updating an area.

RMaps does this already: OsmaRender, Cycle Map, the pretty Mapnik style, and the
useful public transport layer from http://öpnvkarte.de/

Just a rehash to make this clear for myself:

When a track is recorded and the visual Google Maps are shown during tracking
it is
Google-derived. Google map data was helped to create it, so their IP is in the
track.

If one would use disable the data link on the Android device and create a track
then
no Google Maps will be seen. That track can be added to the OpenStreetMap
repository
with just the IP of the person traveling the track.

But then watching a line drawn on a static grid without any information is very
boring.

Cool possibility, OpenStreetMap could possible allow pre-fetching tiles....

http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tile_Usage_Policy - caching is actively
encouraged, for efficiency reasons. Bulk downloading isn't, but if the download
areas
are limited to areas the user's interested in visiting at some suitable small
range
of zooms, I doubt that'd count as "bulk". It's definitely worth raising the
question
on channel or to the sysadmins if you're planning on doing this.

The osmdroid library seems promising to implement: with its API resembling the
GoogleMaps API

Been experimenting and got a seemingly stable build based on the last OGT
release and osmdroid 1.08.
