I think it'd be useful to get a blog up before we launch. I think a blog makes sense for this sort of site, since a lot of people will eventually be relying on it, and communicating with users will become important. Plus, we can write our launch announcement on the blog so that we can communicate up front what our plans are.
I know the gut instinct here is to assume that if we have a blog, nobody will ever post to it, but I think we'll have plenty of opportunities to post to it. We'll be adding features incrementally over time. There will always be downtime (it is inevitable), and this is an excellent way to communicate with users about things like that.

I think an octopress blog will suffice just fine.
