You can already hide like/dislike, comment, and many other UI elements. But then they're always hidden.
It might be possible to hide the UI and show only the video, and then show the UI when the video is paused (a single tap of the playing video).

even if the controls dont autodisappear after a given duration and stay hidden, except when paused, it would be a great patch

I don't think this was ever added.
Feature description
If its possible, please add a feature in youtube revanced that hides all onscreen controls in shorts player like video title, channel name, like-dislike and others. The shorts player should behave like normal videos player in youtube where onscreen controls disappear after a few secs.
Motivation
this should enhance user experience while viewing shorts
