Chinese translation #451

Some feedback left in Steam Reviews:

繁體中文更新成簡體中文跟用法是幾個意思? 沒繁體翻譯用簡體我沒意見,但切成繁中跟簡中然後把繁中更新成簡體中文是甚麼操作?

I have no problem with the simplified translation of the traditional Chinese translation, but what is the operation of cutting it into traditional and simplified and then updating the traditional Chinese into Chinese Simplified?

說好繁體裝好進去簡體+英文 不要把語言混淆好嗎

Say good traditional Chinese into the simplified + English Don't confuse the language

Did the Chinese translation get mixed somewhere with the last release?

BenLubar commented 1 year ago

I think it was a few releases ago that someone updated both. We probably want to revert those changes, but that will leave us with a mixture of traditional chinese and english until we can find a translator.

I found this one commit, And I checked that basemodui_tchinese.txt was replaced. The rest of the files, I didn't check.

That‘s all my stuff, I can‘t read or write chinese, so it can’t be this (it was a fix about references to Alien Swarm 2, which never existed, it was a replacement hickup through the name L4D 2). Link: 7ab924865e36a1ffcd606c9739489df7a4bde3c0

Edit: the original complaint was about the schinese translation containing tchinese stuff.

Crazy3lf commented 1 year ago

Hi, I have look through some *_tchinese.* files to check for Simplified Chinese characters that have a traditional variant. (I did this with a script and a non-exhaustive list of the characters variants, so I might miss some.) I found that most of the files has a few small problems, but the file basemodui_tchinese.txt seems like mostly just a copy of basemodui_schinese.txt it is all in Simplified Chinese.

I might be able to help with these issues in Traditional Chinese translation. But I am not a translator so I can't help further translating from English to Traditional Chinese.

BenLubar commented 1 year ago

I think we're good here until someone picks up the mantle of being the tchinese translator. I haven't seen any new complaints about the translation, which tells me that it's just a mixture of the language and English like other incomplete translations rather than a mixture of 3+ languages.

Re-opening this issue, since there are new complaints about it, i.e.: https://steamcommunity.com/profiles/76561198144293334/recommended/563560/

I don't speak Chinese and can't verify those myself. I the comment someone mentions a workshop item that fixes it, not sure if we could use those files or get in contact?

This is the workshop item mentioned, it was made by the comment author: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2888006982

I also found 2 more older workshop items relating to Simplified Chinese translation: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=909795607 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1299207978

This "GodLike" user has come to me complaining before. I replied to him, I also kept the feedback channel. but he did not reply to me again. And he just kept complaining everywhere and didn't mention any useful concrete information that could be improved. At the same time, the "网络乞丐" user, like "GodLike", thinks that the new text is inconsistent with the text of several years ago, and feels that the quality is bad.

In my opinion, first, the English text has been adjusted in recent years. The new translation has maintained the consistency with the English text, and the wrong and unreasonable translation has been removed. Second, they just complain all the time without clarifying what's wrong or what needs to be fixed. Therefore, I could not understand exactly what they were complaining about, so as to modify the text. But I guess it's the names of the weapons, the maps, things like that? But the current translation is a more accurate translation, the previous weapons, maps text, there are serious mistakes. Some funny death news? It was the style that I took over, and I tried to keep it as consistent as possible, and I thought about it for a long time. So, I don't understand why that would be attacked.

Maybe the wrong translation in this part was deliberately designed by the previous translator, and maybe it was one of the reasons that led to the new bad comments after removing it. I'm sorry for that. But this quality of translation doesn't yield any useful meme, fun, and I'm guessing only players from years past will understand. Due to the requirement of accuracy, I cannot tolerate such a wrong translation of the text.

At the same time, I personally feel that the bad reviews themselves are a kind of survivor effect: users who think the translation is OK don't praise the translation; Only users who feel bad about the translation will give a bad review. So, looking at the commentary alone, it seems to be all about criticizing the translation. However, I can see from the overall data that there are no comments like "Chinese please" in the comment section, which indicates that the translated text has been recognized by most users. I can only apologize to you BenLubar, for complaining from a few years ago players with their unique communication system.

Finally, these older players have gone from attacking my translated text to maliciously speculating on the ReactiveDrop group. In order not to influence the ReactiveDrop group and avoid meaningless arguments. This translation work, since being attacked by this part of the old players, I chose not to timely translation text. Of course, I also left the feedback on steam with competent people to take over.

It took me a lot of time to translate this game (setting up a local dictionary, doing root analysis of unique words, polishing proper nouns, sorting out all the texts, and keeping the translation consistent), but what I got was abuse from some players. At the same time, I also did translation work for other steam games, but these game translations got a lot of likes and steam gifts because of my serious and accurate graceful translation quality. I felt very happy. Also, my new PC has been assembled and it is fun to play AI painting and 3A games with 4090. Therefore, I hereby formally state that I will no longer actively participate in Chinese translation. Maybe later on, when I'm free and suddenly in the mood, I'll submit some PR. Wish ReactiveDrop better and better in the future!!

@zhongqingsong If someone criticises you without any valid input it's probably a child or somebody with the brain of a child, don't worry about such people too much.

Words are the glue between the things we do, if we don't do anything the glue is useless, just empty words.
