SC - what is a small team? #11

It's not clear what a small team is. Do we need to be explicit and if so, how many people would you suggest?

lambda125 commented 9 years ago

Yes - it can be a bit relative (what small means). I tend to think small = teams of 3-8 people.

And therein lies the problem. :-) Talking to Bria and the consulting pool in NSW we tends to see a small team as being an SC with one or two other Readifarians (i.e. up to 3 in the team). This also matches with the size of an engagement we'd expect an SC to comfortably manage on their own. With a team of four or more we begin moving up the complexity scale in terms of people and interactions, and typically see those teams involved in more complex projects needing a different style of customer interaction. These are the gigs where LCs are needed.

Does that make sense?

I think 2-4 people. Happy with up to 3 though.

Agree. I think engagements up to 3 people would be what we should regard as engagements with a small team. Its small enough for an SC to comfortably manage but also leaving them with a good amount of time to contribute to code as well.

How's this minor wording change for you all?

robdmoore commented 9 years ago

Fine by me. I'd probably make it so "3 people" though if I were to nitpick, but not a huge deal either way.

Setting the expectation at 3 makes sense to me. If a person who's currently recognised as an SC exceeds that expectation, great! If someone was recognised as an SC and couldn't lead a three-person team I'd be concerned.
