Avoid gender specific phrases #16

Closed fekberg closed 9 years ago

fekberg commented 9 years ago

We need to support gender diversity, therefore I think the usage of "boy scout" is a bit wrong in the following segment:

I am a "boy scout". I recognise problems early and get in and fix them regardless of whose fault it is.

Is "I am a 'boy scout'" even necessary here? It makes sense even without it.

+1 can simply be:

I recognise problems early and get in and fix them regardless of whose fault it is.

@fekberg a PR here would surely get over the line

I've merged #17 because I wasn't a fan of the phrasing, but removing it because it's "gender specific" is a case of political correctness gone wild.

Really? https://github.com/joyent/libuv/pull/1015

Comments like these are a regression for our industry and humanity in general.

I totally disagree with this, we need to start somewhere and embrace that we have different genders in the profession.

It may seem silly to you, but I assure you it doesn't for others.

+1

it's about inclusiveness and consideration of others

it has nothing at all to do with political correctness

Mike is referring to the boy scout rule http://programmer.97things.oreilly.com/wiki/index.php/The_Boy_Scout_Rule

It is not about gender. What you are objecting to is that boy scouts are called boy scouts (which they are not).

The fact that the boy scout rule is not ubiquitous is sufficient reason to remove that bit.

I think 'I follow the "Boy Scout Rule"' would have also been acceptable - I've certainly heard of the rule and agree it's a skill I should have as a developer.

I get that it's not really a big deal - if I was in a retro with the original wording I'm mostly certain I wouldn't have been failed on the spot due to a gender discrepancy.

It's still a positive change though, and the fact that it hasn't been met with any serious opposition makes me feel lucky to be working at a place like Readify.
