Open Graph icon support #87

Open FWest98 opened 9 years ago

For example Facebook uses the og:--- attributes to show an icon next to the shared link. See the following links: https://developers.facebook.com/tools/debug http://ogp.me/ http://stackoverflow.com/questions/15421521/ogimage-open-graph-warnings-image-size

What asset will FB fall back to if no og:image is found?

phbernard commented 9 years ago

Thank you for the suggestion and the links. I realize that RFG looks awful when shared! :-/

As this picture can get attention in a FB news feed, it should be chosen with care, even on a per landing page basis. However, for people who has no real concern for this picture, the favicon is a great default value. Therefore this feature should come as an option.

RFG is exactly in this situation: I have nothing better than the logo to provide, so let's give it to FB. It will be way better than the default pics.

@paulirish Apparently FB browses the page and... does its best to find something. The SO answer given by @FWest98 above suggest that it is a little messy...

FWest98 commented 9 years ago

In my experience, it picks a random image from the page.

Two steps:

1) Implement the Open Graph image in the non-interactive API. Done and deployed a minute ago. See http://realfavicongenerator.net/api/non_interactive_api 2) Make the feature available from the UI. Todo later.

hello.. looking for a little help getting my favicon to show when shared on social media/facebook. i'm sort of a beginner with wordpress/Tessaract theme.. and building websites in general.. I think the above is over my head loll.. so i'm using the plugin "Favicon by RealFaviconGenerator" I see the favicon next to my url when viewing my site directly, however, when I attempted to share on facebook I can see that the thumbnail is a random image/icon from my media library. helllp :) www.ddova.com
