GPU at Idle but high temperature #1174

Open SIDDHANT0306 opened 1 year ago

My RTX 3080, with fresh install of windows 10 pro and drivers. As soon as I start fancontrol, gpu temp goes high beyond 60 degrees celcius, without any load on it and fan starts spinning according to set fan curve After thorough checking, it seems that GPU load is at 1-2 %, but temp is around 50-70 degree celcius. But as soon as i exit fancontrol, temperature comes to normal range about 30-35 degree celcius and fan slows down according to factory curve. It starts to happen after last one update of fancontrol or one before that, not sure. I double check temp and usage with hwinfo as well. Please look into this.

1) Which temperature: Core? Hotspot? Memory junction? 2) Which provider are you using: NvAPIWrapper or the GPU section of LHM? (Sensor settings) 3) If you close the Fancontrol window, (but FanControl still runs in the background) does the temp go down?

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

I have attached screenshot of gpu temp before and after launching fancontrol. and No, temp doesn't go down after closing fancontrol window( but still running in background). Temp goes down on only after I close fancontrol completely even from background Screenshot (5)_LI Screenshot (1)_LI

Disable all GPU sources (both NVAPIWrapper + the GPU under LHM). Same effect?

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

Temp comes back to normal after disabling NVAPIWrapper and gpu

Driver up to date? To be honest I’ve never seen this. So try ans eliminate variables one at a time. Do you have other software that mess with your gpu?

EDIT: In your last screenshot, you got still "GPU" enabled and your temps are fine?

I installed latest studio driver for rtx 3080. I was using fancontrol since jayztwocents video, I didnt get this problem from that day, but as I said it starts to happen after last update or one before that. And as you mentioned I disabled only nvapi, then temp come back to normal

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

No other software installed, I fresh install 2 times because I thought it was driver issue or corrupt bios, but it turn out to be fancontrol

Rem0o commented 1 year ago

Well if the GPU source works, I would use it and leave NvAPIWrapper alone for now. You should get all the sensors you used before and a new control.

You mentionned it started happening since a few updates. Did you try to use a previous version of FanControl and see if the problem is still there? FYI, no code change in the NvAPIWrapper part of the software since months, so I doubt a FanControl update is at play.

Haven't played with the "studio" drivers from Nvidia, so I don't know if that could impact anything vs the regular driver.

Otherwise, any log.txt next to fancontrol.exe with nvapi errors?

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

I will try to use earlier versions of fancontrol, will inform you after checking with it

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

But after disabling nvapi, fan control for gpu and sensor is greyed out, as it cannot detect it, so now theres only cpu fan curve,

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

I was using studio driver from start, it wasnt happening before.

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

tried few things, fresh installed win 11 and latest drivers, temp rises again and goes down immediatly after completely closing fan control (from taskbar). then installed win10 with game ready drivers and also with studio drivers, same thing, temp drops quickly after closing fancontrol completely. starting fan control with nvapiwrapper enabled, rises temp upto 90 c, disabling it drops temp slowly. but exiting fancontrol temp comes to 30 within seconds Fan Control was working fine before, i am using it from april, but now it seems that something is causing problem, dont know what.

Rem0o commented 1 year ago

Did you try an older version?

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

tried v122 and v120, same thing, idle temp without fancontrol around 36c, after opening fancontrol with nvapi enabled, temp jump to 40 instantly, and continues to rise slowly to 60 and then around 75c, after closing fancontrol completely (from taskbar), temp goes down to 40 instantly

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

my gpu is rtx 3080 10gb (LHR), maybe nvidia's latest driver has to do something with nvapiwrapper.

SIDDHANT0306 commented 1 year ago

Deleted fancontrol and userconfig file, installed latest version of fancontrol, and did auto config and set fan curve, and appearently it is working now, gpu temp is around 37c, with nvapiwrapper and nvidia 0% hardware curve overdrive enabled. I should have this earlier :) Looks like there was something wrong with userconfig. I will update after few days, if something goes wrong,. Lets hope for the best 👍 Thank you again for this software...

It starts to happen again, but now i noticed something, check taskmanager gpu 3d graph, 1) 1st image is when i click on taskmanager 2) 2nd image is when i click fancontrol window

those spikes in 3d graph cause temp to rise immediatly. After closing fancontrol, as i said earlier, temp fall down to 36 instantly.

Note: Gpu & nvapiwrapper both are enabled
