Hello

Firstly, awesome software, thank you.

I am having a small issue though where when FanControl is running, I am unable to turn the screen brightness up or down with the keyboard keys, which on my Dell XPS are F11 and F12. If I close the app, the keys start working again. When FanControl is running I am able to control the screen brightness through normal methods in Windows. It's literally just the keys stop working - as if FC is some how commandeering those keys?

I have looked in the settings for the app to see if there is anything relating to screen brightness but am unable to spot anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

FC does not have anything bound to F11 or F12, and the hotkeys that are used are only available when the Window is opened and focused. Did you try with the window closed?

Hello, thanks for responding.

Yes it does it with the FC window visible, minimized or in the tray. Just to be clear, the keyboard brightness controls are on a secondary function of the F11 and F12 keys. I have tried with FN lock on and off to be sure I'm not being dumb.

I have just discovered something else - I will try explain - I apologise if it's wordy and incoherent:

If I un-couple the fan control from curve - the screen brightness keys start working again. Put simply: if I delete the fan curve and do nothing else - the keys start working again.

If I then add a new fan curve with a different name that fan controls are not linked to and I set the curve temperature sensor to any available sensor...the screen brightness keys work.

As soon as I set one of the fan control curves to a curve, the brightness keys stop working.

Very strange. I hope something I've said rings a bell with you and gives you an idea of what might be happening. I can provide more info if required.

Thank you.

The Dell plugin uses a Dell driver that "might" conflict for some reason with your FN keys... I do have a Dell laptop myself and the fn keys work just fine with FanControl on, so I'm dumbfounded by your issue.

cattywampus04 commented 10 months ago

Interesting. Do you mind me asking what Dell laptop model you have?

Rem0o commented 10 months ago

It's a Precision 5550

Thanks. Yeah that's weird then. My Dell is from 2017 so I guess it's possible just the Dell driver is not fully compatible with older Dell's? Just a guess.

Not a deal-breaking issue though. I can still change the brightness on the taskbar controls.

Hi there, I want to report that I am also facing this issue with brightness control on my Dell Inspiron 15 7567, When FanControl is running, doesn't matter if the window is open or it is minimized to the taskbar (running in background), I am unable to change screen brightness using Fn+F11 or F12. Closing the program resolves this issue.

What is weird for my case is that, all other Fn+F(x) key functions work, be that volume control, keyboard backlight control, media playback controls or airplane mode control. Only the brightness control is affected, as long as the program is running.

Can you look into this?

P.S: I am running latest windows 10 x64 19045.4651, with all the latest drivers available for my system (except for the bios because latest one blocks undervolting. Also, fancontrol is updated to the latest version.
