Port closes when Port Map quits #3

The main issue preventing helpful use of this app is that as soon as the 
program closes, the ports 
close. It may be a good idea to run a "helper application" to sustain the port 
mapping.

Why do you have a problem with leaving the app open to achieve exactly what you 
want?

Well, it is because this is the kind of thing that you do in the background. It 
is a bit annoying to have a dock icon 
and effectively a full program running for something that is "always on". It 
would be like having to run "Time 
Machine.app" all the time just for it to make backups in the background.

My idea is that you open Port Map, configure the ports as you wish, then quit 
it. The program in the background 
will put a small helper application (without a dock icon) in your login items, 
which will keep the ports open 
without having to run a full blown app. It would greatly extend the usefulness 
of an already useful program.

But it's you app, and this is just my suggestion for it :)

Another possible idea is to have a setting that switches it from a dock icon to 
a menu item. I wouldn't mind 
having the ability to quickly port forward from anywhere. 

BTW, this program makes using iPhone Remote (aka Telekinesis) from Blacktree. I 
could never keep the right 
ports forwarded.

I think the port should stay mapped if the application is closed.

If you want a menu item port mapper, check out Lighthouse. I am trying not to 
buy it...

I think Port Map currently is a good solution for *temporarily* opening ports. 
I open
port 80 when I want to show my boss my local copy of a web app, but I don't 
always
want to leave it open.

I think a nice way to implement an always-on type feature would be to have a
checkmark next to the Active toggle, under a column that says "Persistent".

If I'm not mistaken, Port Map just needs to *not* unmap any ports marked as
persistent when it closes down. However, if you want it to always attempt to 
open
those ports, a background helper app or menu bar would be needed.

oh, i got a feature request: (someone) make this a prefpane - i think thats the 
best place for this app considering 
the way it works now. however: it's more like a technology demo, isn't it?
