I just noticed the color isn't working in the write() function I tested before. 
I should have used pdf.text_color instead of draw_color my bad.

This one works with foreground color too. 0x000FF come up blue :)

Could you make your patch against the last version of template.py in the 
repository?

You seem to have a older version so it is difficult to merge
