[Suggestion] Art Badge Rewards #638

We have a lot of talented artists in the community and it would be nice to reward them with some art related badges. I was thinking of something similar to the dev badges that could track how much you've contributed. I'm sure we could commission some nice badges from an Art Helper. Possible categories:

The Gauntlet wins might be a little hard to track however, the Art Helper commissions should be pretty straight forward and I suspect there’s a spreadsheet somewhere with all this information already. For the gauntlet we would ideally have a polling bot that was anonymous, recorded the winner, and closed the poll after a set amount of time. If not all of these can be tracked retroactively as far back as the discord history goes. I would be interested in managing these badges if it’s something the community would be into.

Those guys indeed deserve more visibility and recognition.

Art Helper Commissions Completed is indeed an awesome idea.

On the other hand, I don't think rewarding gauntlet wins would be beneficial, as it encourages competitiveness over collaboration.

Fair point, competitveness in an icon gauntlet might undermine the overall quality of the artwork produced. Plus, tracking art commissions would be much easier of the two.

I did have a half baked idea for a weekly art competition that would feature a set in need of updating. Basically a super Icon Guantlet with a splash of AotW and the Unwanted. Do you think that would have the same quality issues if it was more formalized? I'm also unsure if we would get enough contestants to be interesting or if it would be the same three people every week 😅

I am for awarding badge artistst who keep improvements on graphical means of achievement sets (I'm one of them, so it could look a little self-praising). Nonetheless, I think that timed or competition-based events wouldn't come out for good in this case. It would be a waste of effort, if few people had to make badges for one full set, while only one of theirs work will be appreciated. That could at some point even demotivate people into contributing.

I think that it would be good to track comissions and works done for games on "Stock/Recycled Icons" hub. Eventually, change the latter into periodical comissions (that would work like "Unwanted" for art, but in form of comissions).

Of course there would need to be distinction between small works (like doing only game icon or only few badges) and big one for full set (or most of it).

Would it make sense to move this from the Open Issues list to the Discussions area of GitHub? Discussions allow for more general banter and for topics to be voted on. It seems more appropriate that the Issues list be limited to actual bugs and active features/enhancements in order to maintain focus and prioritization of development.

Discussions are a newish feature on GitHub, so it might not be widely known, but it could be useful for scenarios like this.

Good idea, this would fit the discussion feature better, I'm going to close this and am moving it over there. Also letting go of the competition idea, I like Krylan's idea better for commissions to clean up the "Stock/Recycled Icons" hub.
