Models for new compounds: generic amino acid, ammonia and reproductase #143

Closed jjonj closed 9 years ago

jjonj commented 10 years ago

For cell reproduction we need a series of new compounds: generic amino acid, ammonia and reproductase

These models are, like the previous compound models, are perhaps not permanent additions to the game but the alternative would be to use placeholders so it would be nice to have some kind of models for these, even if they aren't great looking ones.

TheGuineapig commented 10 years ago

This is a bit off topic but dont we need CO2 aswell for photosynthetic cells?

jjonj commented 10 years ago

We have a model for CO2 :) You see it ejected from your cell every once in a while when you produce ATP. There may be plenty of compounds that we will use in the future that could use models, but when we get compound clouds instead of the actual specific particles, we may not want to use the models anymore.

TheGuineapig commented 10 years ago

I think that the C02 model at least needs revising as it doesn't look very good IMO, shouldn't C02 spawn in the environment aswell? Photosynthesis in mind. Maybe is given out by other cells but instead of fading away it just floats around in the environment until your cell or others absorb it. Just a thought.

jjonj commented 10 years ago

I don't think this is the time to be upgrading the quality of (probably) temporary models. The same argument can be made for your idea for CO2 no reasons to do a ton of polishing when it is a temporary system with the particles.

TheGuineapig commented 10 years ago

Ok, I just felt it was right for CO2 to spawn in the environment

jjonj commented 10 years ago

I'll create an issue right now for a sunlight & Photosynthesis system. Environmental CO2 emitters will follow from that.

TheGuineapig commented 10 years ago

Ok sure, I'm learning blender currently so I'll get right on it.

jjonj commented 10 years ago

Note that you will need to read this tutorial to get it to work in-game: http://thrivegame.forum-free.ca/t1402-basic-blender-modeling-animation-and-exporting-to-ogre-tutorial The animation specifics can naturally be ignored for this issue.

tjblazer85 commented 10 years ago

Hey jjonj can we get like a 2D referrence to use to make the 3D models?

jjonj commented 10 years ago

I don't think any currently exist, but I'll see what I can do.

jjonj commented 10 years ago

not much luck so far, any chance you could channel your creative mind and make some up? It's not too important they look good for now, and I'm not feeling awfully create myself atm. Amino acids are related to producing DNA, Ammonia is a common and smelly gas, Reproductase is fictional within our game but is even more related to DNA than Amino acids.

NickTheNick-zz commented 10 years ago

Actually I don't think Reproductase will ever leave a cell, because it's a measure of how close a cell is to reproduction. By that I mean I don't think it needs a model.

I got 3 ideas for what an Amino Acid could like: http://imgur.com/DpImfVQ. In the Image it shows a squigly rectangle shaped like bacon because Amino Acid makes Protien, next to it is a Square (It's just for the simplicity of it I guess) and next to that is a Square with a Triangle hole in it, the Triangle represents an A for Amino Acid. They are all colored Brown or Red Orange.

jjonj commented 10 years ago

Sounds good to me :)

tjblazer85 commented 10 years ago

Which one?

jjonj commented 10 years ago

Oh I thought each were for the three missing models, I prefer the square&triangle one :)

I wasn't able to change the view of the render image so instead of a view from above it's at an angle.

jjonj commented 10 years ago

Awesome :)

jjonj commented 10 years ago

Okay I got them in game (I'm busy these days) http://i.imgur.com/r7QVUnP.png Could you rotate them so they lie down and make sure to give the model and material names

tjblazer85 commented 10 years ago

I rotated the model and gave the model and material names. ( I only edited the Red Orange one because it looks like you chose that one.)

Here's the download link: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/137682043/Amino%20Acid%20Red%20Orange.rar

tjblazer85 commented 10 years ago

I was thinking Ammonia could look like any of these two. The picture explains why they look like that. (Forgot that the picture doesn't explain the color choice. Dark Blue because it is usually portrayed as blue and it is toxic. Bright Yellow because most bottles of Ammonia have a yellow color.)

P.S. I know other chemicals are represented as a bunch of circles connected with lines but most shapes have already been used for other chemicals in this game so I had to use a circle or an oblong.

Hope it helps :)

jjonj commented 10 years ago

It feels like our models are mostly symbolic rather than realistic, so i'd prefer the triangulair shape! Also i'd prefer it yellow as that signifies the strong sensory experience of ammonia with a toxic theme, and if it's the accurate color of it, even better!

jjonj commented 10 years ago

http://imgur.com/LQ6meFc It seems you somehow broke the material, but thats not a big issue, I can edit things to use the first one you gave, which works. But the rotation doesn't seem to have changed and I wonder why they're so tall (not that I mind the look of them tall)... I can see in blender that they aren't tall, maybe something wierd is going on, on my end.

jjonj commented 9 years ago

tjblazer85 are you still around?

Moopli commented 9 years ago

@tjblazer85

tjblazer85 commented 9 years ago

Sorry I haven't been around for a while but School has really kept me busy. My Christmas break is coming in a few weeks however so I could help around by then.

tjblazer85 commented 9 years ago

Hey @jjonj, I was able to make the Ammonia today though! Here have a look:

Here's the download link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/96o3xtrdbmasm8u/Ammonia.rar?dl=0 P.S. If there's anything else to do I might not be able to help with it because exams are coming up and I'll be busy studying, however I'll still try to help if I can and if I'm lucky enough to have the Math and Science test on the same day I'll be able to help even more!

jjonj commented 9 years ago

Looks good! That should be able to make it into 0.2.4 Focus on your exams for now and come back more energized later ;)

jjonj commented 9 years ago

For future and others reference I think we need a photosynthesis organelle as well! and we could also use some other generic compound models, however remember that these will likely be temporary as we will be using a cloud system in the future.

Poisonchocolate commented 9 years ago

A chloroplast would be very easy. So easy, in fact, that it's just a green disk/lens-shaped organelle. But, as an idea, we could have (in the future) a system that has variants of certain organelles. For example, in reality, chloroplasts can sometimes also be pill-shaped, spherical, net-shaped, ribbon-like, or any number of shapes. With this and other organelles, we could have some cells with one variety, and some with another shape.

tjblazer85 commented 9 years ago

@jjonj @Poisonchocolate, I remember someone posting a Chloroplast model in the Thrive forums but I can't seem to find it, If you guys can then that we would be awesome! If you guys can't then I'll just make one.

P.S. I'm finally on Christmas Break!

I might be able to convert it within som couple of days, but I ain't sure I'll be able to get to a computer to soon.

looks great! :)
