It appears that the pipeline compiler doesn't like pipelines with the separators and
endchars at the beginning of the stages instead of at the end. This is a bit irritating,
as I prefer to place them at the beginning of stages. (In CMS, it didn't matter which
end they were at, as the stages were all concatenated into one big string for execution.)
