Is APT suitable for characterizing GB 5DOF? #2

Or is it more of a replacement for optical serial sectioning + extra compositional information?

Thank you for your interest! APT is in principle also suitable for the characterization of GB 5DOF. However, there is a special requirement for the material system, i.e., a pure element that many poles can be identified. My colleague Ye Wei has developed a method for this application: Y. Wei et al, Ultramicroscopy 194, 15 (2018). In my method, chemical decoration is used to identify the position of GBs. This method can be used for a broader range of material systems without a specific requirement for pole identification. In the future, we will further deepen the structural characterization of the APT dataset using advanced ML techniques. This will not be an easy task, as the crystal poles in many alloy systems are difficult to identify.
