This is a potentially long and complicated issue, that should probably be a milestone on it's own, I'm just dumping some info here until we define this better:

On mobile - zoom should only enlarge the map and not the input/search box. Tried on nexus 5 samsung note 10.1 Both Android with Chrome browser.

by zoom you mean the browser's zoom? I don't think there are any hooks to it. I think in general that zoom is off limits, and irrelevant. The way to handle support for mobile is to have it a first class citizen, not to require the user to zoom in any way.

This is feedback I got from a user - maybe that's what they are expecting on a smartphone from similar apps...
