We can do this during winter break.

Is the point here just that we'll use this URL rather than rhodes-notebook.org?

ml8 commented 2 years ago

Yep

CatieWelsh commented 2 years ago

I don't see a reason to change the url. Any particular reason to do so?

ml8 commented 2 years ago

If we're going to have rhodescs.org as our homepage, it would be consolidated. That's about the only reason. One less domain to remember?

Do we use rhodescs.org for anything else? Or are we planning to? Would it maybe make more sense to use something like "cs.rhodes.edu/notebook"?

Also, I would personally prefer "notebook" over "notebooks."

The plan is to use it for the department website, which Phil is building.

So right now the domains we have are (www.)cs.rhodes.edu and *.rhodescs.org. IT has no problem creating new subdomains under cs.rhodes.edu, but we have to ask them to create the DNS records for us, which isn't a problem, but I'm worried could get annoying if need stuff changed too often (like if we need to quickly reconfigure the notebooks or something and the IP changes). So we got csrhodes.org as a way to have 100% control over the domain.

I have a little DNS experience but not much. That said, I think there's a way that IT might give us control over making our own DNS records under cs.rhodes.edu (give us our own zone or something?), but I haven't researched if it's feasible or practical.

As for the new website, I was planning on making that accessible both from cs.rhodes.edu and rhodescs.org. And we can certainly make something like cs.rhodes.edu/notebook redirect to notebook[s].rhodescs.org if we want.
