Well, it's a service for Lemmy user, you might have noticed the different wording for Mastodon and Lemmy users.
Also it should only fix links for other communities, not the one you're posting to, making the links clickable for Lemmy users.

They seem the same to me, at least on my posts,

It should, but it seems to be detecting the mention as a link to the communtiy and replying on the basis of that. It's an unavoidable part of posting from mastodon because you have to include the mention in the post body or it will not be posted to or boosted by the community.
Can you show an example where it happens?

I banned the bot from my community a long time ago so the last example of this happening that I have is here:
This bot is very problematic for users who post to Lemmy from Mastodon because when posting from mastodon you must mention the community's activitypub group actor in order for posts to appear in the Feed. On lemmy it always generates a Markdown link to that community, coupled with the fact that Mastodon users cannot link Communities the way Lemmy users can. Coupled with the fact that Lemmy does not respect Mastodon's blocking system and allows them to continue replying unimpeded.
For these reasons I feel it is very important to add an exemption for users who are posting from Mastodon, as these instructions will not help them, and the bot will respond to them on the basis of mentioning the community handle in the first place, an action necessary to post from Mastodon.
