New Container for Uploading PDFs #437

Open zburgert1997 opened 4 months ago

It would be nice to have a seperate container where the user can upload PDFs into a QRiS project. For example, the container could contain PDFs such as design & as-built reports, cartographic products, etc. By clicking on the PDFs in the container, the user would pull up the PDF on their desktop.

I like this 💡 idea.

@philipbaileynar, I would like to brainstorm this one with you.

Could this be stored in the Metadata Tab as well?

I propose:

  1. Add a new button: "Add File" that would navigate to a browser for user to select a local file.
  2. Clicking OK would copy the file to the QRIS project.
  3. An entry for the file would be added to the Metadata table. User would be able to click on the filename to open it.
  4. Editing the file name in the metadata would change the file name saved in the project folder.
  5. Deleting the entry would delete the file from the project.

I am open to other ideas as well.

Storing documents within QRiS feels like a monumental reinvention of the wheel. Excellent storage and citation systems already exist.

Infinitely more practical would be the ability to store links to materials that are curated using professional, feature rich systems (rather than us hacking something half baked into QRiS).

What if we simply maintain a list of links. These can be for anything; reports, citations, datasets etc. Users can use their own corporate systems (Google Drive, DropBox, Box etc) or upload their documents into Zenodo or some feature rich citation system which which they are already familiar.

We could even have buttons that redirect to Zenodo and the other usual suspects.
