Owyhee Watershed - Idaho BRAT run #136

From our IDFG sponsor Cory:

After talking with our partners for the Owyhee watershed habitat restoration fund we are pursuing, is there any way you could get that watershed ran for us in the next week or so? ... We are thinking that this would help guide (and provide something to reference) with the NRCS when we go to apply for the funding.

@kbartelt I think you're probably the one to do this... but we may re-assign if your plate is full. I want to get this run going as we're going to use this as one of our Idaho BRAT case studies. I'm waiting on Cory to find out exact HUCs. If we don't get that, just run all (I suspect there is an Upper, Middle and Lower, but I have not checked). This will just be a provisional BRAT run.

Hey @joewheaton and @kbartelt

At the huc8 level I'm looking at the following watersheds (sorry I don't have a name for them, just the number): 17050102, 17050103, 17050104, 17050107, 17050108. I know that one of them is outside of the owyhees, but it still meshes up with our focal species (sage grouse, redband trout and Columbian spotted frogs). When is the BRAT output needed by?

@CoryMosby two weeks might be a little tight, but lets see how we get on.... we'll at least have some of them done. It depends a little on what else @kbartelt is juggling in the mix. @wally-mac gets back next week (the real manager ;) ) and he'll have a better sense as to overall picture on work-load and juggling priorities. In meantime, we get the delusional lost in la-la land manger (me) to say 'sure we can do that'.

Hey @kbartelt, I tried to open up the Middle Owyhee using the Box link and it says that this is unavailable to me. Was that for Joe or should I be able to access it as well? Thanks.

Give this link a try for the Middle Owyhee.

A good place to start poking around would be the layer package here.

Please keep in mind that this run is only provisional. The vegetation input, etc. have not been calibrated and we have not yet done any virtual or on-the-ground validation... there may be changes after this happens.

Let me know if you have any issues viewing the files or have questions. I would be happy to set up a quick GoTo Meeting or phone call to go over the model or answer any questions if needed.

@wally-mac I have completed provisional runs for each of the 5 watersheds- see links below:

My next step is to begin the validation process as we discussed. For this, I was going to start with the Middle Owyhee. I will create a dam census web app and start from there.

@joewheaton on Monday you mentioned some raw data from IDFG that we will need to incorporate into the validation process... I believe that is this data here, but it does not look like there is anything from region 3 where these HUC8s are located.

Please let me know if I should proceed differently. Thanks!

@wally-mac I uploaded all of these data from the emails you sent to box here. I also made a shapefile of the region 3 data (where these HUC8s are located) here to see how the IDFG data points from Cory line up with the provisional BRAT capacity outputs. I made a dam census app for the Middle Owyhee but haven't completed the census process.

@CoryMosby have you had a chance to look over any of the provisional BRAT runs?

Thank you for reaching out. @kbartelt and I interrogated the initial BRAT model runs earlier this week and found acceptable results except on mainsteam rivers. @bangen and I meet yesterday to come up with a method to better enforce Q2 (two-year flood) stream power to limit dam building capacity. We'll work hard to get a new model run in time for your deadline. What is the deadline date exactly? Thanks! Note: Karen will not have time to work on this since school is back session so Sara Bangen and I will be working on this one.

The deadline for the application is a month away, but we need those outputs sooner so we can try and draft up a proposal.
