Beaver Dam Data Capture #32

Closed wally-mac closed 6 years ago

wally-mac commented 6 years ago

Based on the suggest of @webernick79 @joewheaton and I on 5/10/18 decided that a BRAT data collector webmap app would be a useful investment. As initially conceived, the app will allow users to collect dam location data in a web version of arcgis online. The app will have a drop down form that would allow the user to collect:

active dams inactive dams stock ponds (as training data for AI) lodges primary dams (optional) secondary (optional) record how confident they are in their “call” i.e., high, medium or low. record the date of the imagery

This app would also allow users to collect additional information such as: known conflict areas Beaver translocation areas BDA loctions Sensitive infrastructure

The thought is here that the app should be extended beyond just dam counts. The rationale for app is our current method of using Google Earth is wrought with flaws. It's clunky for users to collect data in Google Earth because of difficulties in assigning attributes resulting in time-consuming data collection. It's difficult for novice users to create KMZ files and even more difficult for them to save the files therefore there is a high potential to lose data. The advantages of having an app to that is eliminate the above issues all together. Nick are you interested in given the development of this app a go? @bangen please chime in if you have any suggestions.

All, I'm just going through the editing capabilities for Arc Web Apps, unfortunately they are much more limited than I anticipated. I will follow up soon

@joewheaton and I discussed how @webernick79 app would be a more appropriate way for the Idaho Fish and Game biologists to identify the items that I outlined in an email to Corey Mosby. In the email I ask him to provide : Dam locations, beaver activity, BDA locations, Translocation areas and high conflict areas. I ask for GIS layer of some sort (KMZ, shapefile, or GPS data) and if such GIS data is not available stream location/name and/or contact info of folks we can solicit for additional information would be useful. Obviously, this App would be a much easier and cleaner way to collect the data by simplifying dropping a point on the map where they knew there was conflict, beaver translocations, beaver dam analogs and the like.

As per our Friday call, this and #35 are top priority for @webernick79 this week as our TNC workshop is next week and we want to use Survey123 and test it out there.

I need to focus on paper form versions of both. I will take the lead on that (#41 and ).

Spatial Resolution...

For now, one key think we didn't discuss Friday @webernick79 was having two versions of this in terms of spatial resolution (all observations are points):

  1. focusing the spatial resolution of the data collection for this app on the dam complex. This is really important especially in the field, because it can be really annoying to have to go to every dam. Its much easier to ask someone to go to the main primary dam, get a location. And then ask them how many other dams upstream and downstream (separately) are part of this complex. This really speeds things up in the field.
  2. focusin as we have now on spatial resolution of dam.

Can you try opening a survey on your phones. Can you collect data and send it? What type of Arc Online account are you using?

(I'm going to email this as well, open on your phones and let me know)

joewheaton commented 6 years ago

Okay, Weber, here's what you need for form specs in order of priority (lets do one first and go back and forth).

  1. Beaver Dam Complex Form - Basic
  2. Beaver Dam Form - Basic
  3. Beaver Dam Form - Advanced
  4. Beaver Dam Complex Form - Advanced
  5. Beaver Activity Form

Note, the boxes are checkboxes and the circles are for radio buttons in form types (pull downs are fine in lieu of radio buttons)

Hey Nick,

Using my ArcGIS online login this link goes to a spawning survey. Is this what you meant to share or should it be a BRAT survey? Please advise.

Wally, yes, that's find, just wanted to test permissions.

nick4rivers commented 6 years ago

OK @joewheaton and @wally-mac here's a individual beaver dam form:

https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/12727492ed0e4bf5b3192b54d9190efc?open=menu

Couple things to note:

The form had a single attribute STATUS with choice: active, abandoned, historic.

To me, this is really two pieces of information? What is the functional CONDITION of the dam: - Intact - actively ponding flow - Breached - some ponding of flow - Blown - not ponding flow

And is the dam currently being MAINTAINED: - Active - active beaver maintenance - Inactive/Abandoned - not actively maintained by beaver

Give it a look and let me know how to edit?

Here is some video feedback

nick4rivers commented 6 years ago

@joewheaton , @wally-mac , @bangen

All, at this point I have only cooked up two forms: BRAT INFERENCE

and

INDIVIDUAL DAM - BASIC

Offer any feedback on these surveys?

@joewheaton , you have 4 other forms above? are these needed for the upcoming workshop? or are these something you wanna cook up in the future?

Also wondering if we need tutorials, youTube videos demonstrating use for this upcoming workshop?

@wally-mac, let me know if you ar estill thinking of a set of apps for doing validaiton? Send layers?

wally-mac commented 6 years ago

Nick, yes we are still working on pulling together the validation data sets and I plan on providing these to you ASAP. We’re shooting to get these to you by close of business tomorrow. Does that work with your schedule? Sorry to be so last minute but we have a lot of balls in the air right now. Thank you

@webernick79, this is really coming together nicely. I’m interested to see what @joewheaton thinks.

joewheaton commented 6 years ago

@webernick79 can we set the default reach length to 300 m please on the INDIVIDUAL DAM - BASIC https://survey123.arcgis.com/share/44f9c3e1c8744ff9a07d2e0c9f7f5173?open=menu
