Automatically alternate background colours of blocks #134

Users use dashed lines or :hiccup code to visually separate first level blocks. But spreadsheets have a well known and widely accepted way to subtly enhance different blocks: they alternate the background color of rows.

Feature implementation Every first level block has a alternating different background colour. Automatically. I don't require anything fancy like your own color code options, just a simple proven color scheme.

If you have a mock-up of this feature, we'd love to see it! > please see attachment (I actually made it using a spreadsheet.....) Schermafbeelding 2020-05-08 om 17 49 32

Additional context Once you open up Roam to a wider audience, a better UX-design will improve broad acceptance and lower the learning curve. By referring to a well known spreadsheet concept (different item = different background) the concept of blocks will be easier to grasp.

As a user, I am not sure that I would like this. Some pages I have use blocks as paragraphs. It’s long-form content. This would make Roam rather unpleasant to read and write in.

It is quite dangerous to make assumptions about UX by drawing parallels to entirely different concepts. Roam is not a spreadsheet. It’s something else and people will have to learn that. Using the visual language of spreadsheets for something that is not a spreadsheet is confusing. If you’re interested, you can read up on this in the interaction design foundation glossary.

Finally, it doesn’t seem like there is any evidence that this is actually a problem.
