Um. If someone is already in the room, why would you be somewhere else?
And there already is a sound when they join the room.
Sound on every single chat would just be irritating.

i usually open my mail or facebook while I and my friends wait for someone else
to join, and i'm not the only one.
i know there's a sound when someone joins the room, that's why i open the web
browser just to kill time, and when i hear the sound, i just open the lobby
window to see who joined, but there's no sound for the messages, so when i
heard someone joined, i go and check who's in, but also notice that there is a
bunch of important messages from my friends i didn't read in that moment.
and its the sound of a grenade bouncing, i don't find it irritating, it's not
the sound of an explosion or something like that, if someone finds that
irritating, they could turn it off in the options menu :D (like the main menu
song)

The problem with "just turn it off" is right now we have an option for frontend
sound.
That does not allow differentiating between the relatively less frequent join
sound and a continual ping as people chat, you'd either have both or neither.
So, a new config option would be needed.

we could play the sound only when a given user is being pinged...
