Sounds like you guys are off to a good start and have a solid plan. Marking up a small portion of the text before tackling the entire thing is a good idea.
Though I'm not familiar with this text, choosing just one of three methods you proposed may be a bit limiting. It may result in an incomplete picture of the text. I would consider combining aspects of each method or tailoring your schema to allow the most effective parts of each method to be used.
This sounds pretty interesting. Our group is in a similar position in terms of determining how to markup our XML. We want to see if Van Gogh's letters shed light into his mental state, so we need to distinguish between positive and negative statements in his writing. We haven't really gotten to this phase yet, but finding a way to distinguish between the two will definitely be a challenge, especially since emotion can be something very subjective.
Could how you choose to mark up your play affect your results? It seems like a more linguistic style of markup could be more specific and yield some interesting trends/results, but could marking it up this way potentially not capture other details of the text that mark up statements or line would?
It seems like you have a good start. I skimmed through what you have marked up for the Faust project: the tags of the soul with the attributes of earthly and divine. Do you have a plan for any other tags? I see that Islam proposed a linguistic mark-up. I wonder how you would develop the linguistic schema with what kind of specific tags and you would make it help your analysis of the two souls(consciousness) in Fast.
Last meeting, we began by agreeing on a single research question, which was: "Based on his actions and speech, how does the dichotomy between Faust's two souls change, and how does Faust evolve as a character throughout the play?" Upon agreement, we set out to find how we would markup the etxt to best match the "soul" each scene leaned more towards. Each of us proposed different styles: I proposed marking up each statement or action, Danny proposed marking up each line, while Islam proposed a more linguistic style of markup. We all agreed to perform a test markup of the play's second scene (Outside the City Gate), and come in for our next meeting today with them. Upon review, we will agree on one as the standard, and markup the rest of the play in that format. We also discussed different ways we could incorporate Mallet into our project, in order to trace certain themes in the text.
