utf-8 fixes and translation preparation #34

Trying to fix the utf-8 signs and looking into the translation things.

@Robertdebrus while I'm not done with all, please already merge to avoid later merge conflicts.

Please don't squash merge, e.g. it would have been easier for me if I did put the utf8 changes last year in a separate commit.
