This post is a revised excerpt of DISCUSS what code, content, and lessons to adapt from MathPlanet #303, which contains additional content that may be useful to draw on here, but that got too long and included a data analysis discussion moved to https://github.com/RoboTutorLLC/DataAnalysis/issues.
Questions about gamifying by defining "winning" as improvement, harnessing motivational value of close wins and losses as Derek Lomas found, and using audio prompts as feedback.
My recommended options (***) seek to:
@amyogan - Can you recommend the option you prefer for each one?
Should we define winning as improvement over: a. Previous score (***) +: ensures winning about half the repetitions even if fluctuating around the same performance
b. Previous best score +: rewards learning -: less frequent, but similar to a. if learning over time
Which activities should we gamify -- and why? a. none? b. all? c. some? if so, which sorts? *** just the ones already gamified
Besides verbal feedback, what graphical and/or other feedback do we need for motivation? a. none? *** b. numerical score as in bpop and Akira? c. sound effect like cymbal crash in bpop?
How should feedback compare across activities? a. Uniform, e.g. in the banner *** +: consistent -: boring? b. Varied +: more fun? -: confusing?
(How and when) should assessment be displayed? a. not *** b. at end of game, as numerical score as in bpop +: doesn't distract once game ends -: disconnected from item level c. after each item, as an updated numerical score as in bpop and Akira scoreboard d. after each item, as an icon, e.g. green smiley or red frownie e. after each item, as an updated unary score in a row of dots that turn into wins, losses, and ties
What verbal feedback should Mentor give in each case?
"Winning": a. beating your previous score on this activity. "Great! You beat your previous score!" *** b. beating your previous best score on this activity. "Great! You beat your previous best!"
"Tying": matching your previous score. "See if you can do even better next time!" ***
"Close loss": a. approaching your previous score. "That was close! You almost won!" *** b. approaching your previous best. "That was close! You almost won!"
"Far loss": a. scoring below your previous score. "Too bad! You can learn from mistakes. Keep trying and you can do better next time!" *** b. scoring below your previous best. "Too bad! You can learn from mistakes. Keep trying and you can do better next time!"
"Failing": scoring at chance and getting demoted. "That was too hard! Let's try something easier." ***
"Graduating": reaching mastery level on the current task and advancing to the next task/level/topic. "Congratulations! You're ready for something different/harder/new!" ***
