the only comment I have for now is that other people need to use the template too so I was expecting you to make a new file but I will be more clear about this in the instructions.

Oops, this completely slipped my mind. Other onboarding tasks I've done in the past have asked me to edit in-place, so I'd assumed this was the same. My apologies!
