Disabling the E2E encryption turn off #486

Open breakneckgt opened 3 years ago

breakneckgt commented 3 years ago

Is there any possibility to disable the E2E encryption button for users (a "key" near the chat room name) because sometimes users click on it accidentally or on purpose and then forget to turn it back on? It is important for us that all chats stay encrypted. I couldn't find any settings regarding this. If there's no such functionality at the moment, can it be added in future? Or maybe this issue can be managed in some other way?

Hi and thanks for reporting this.

Can you please use a bug template if you are reporting an issue - this information is extremely important for triage:

https://github.com/RocketChat/Rocket.Chat/issues/new?assignees=&labels=&template=bug_report.md

Make sure you follow the guidelines:

https://rocket.chat/docs/contributing/reporting-issues

That includes testing on the latest version of Rocket.Chat - you can test on open.rocket.chat in the sandbox channel.

Note also that for general questions and help you are better off asking in https://forums.rocket.chat or https://open.rocket.chat #support as github is reserved for bugs.

As for you request - just disable both otr and e2e in Admin UI image image

Well, it's not a bug, but rather a lack of functionality. Sorry, seems like I wasn't enough clear.

I need to disable the possibility to turn off the E2E for users. They can turn off E2E encryption in direct chats by pressing the key icon in chat header. Can this be blocked somehow?

Hi breakneckgt, thanks for bringing this up :D

There is currently no way to disable that button unfortunately. This is a potential feature request. What I can do is transfer this to our feature requests repository and the conversation can then move forward :)

Thanks!!

It may be possible to disable it with some custom CSS.

Have a search on line for 'css hide button' or similar.

As it was said in the forums, custom CSS won't work in mobile and desktop apps. We use them actively and can't switch to browser-based chat.

OK. In which case the answer will be a lot more complex... !

We will raise it with the Product Team.

Hey there,

We had a conversation about this with the Product Team. This is something they're also thinking to work on, but it will take time, as this is not on top of the priority list at the moment. We're considering this for the Q1 2022.

Would be perfect to have this worked on sooner than later. There's a lot of us who are waiting to take the full plunge into Rocket Chat but cannot because of E2E not being an option to enforce for DMs or keeping users from disabling it. There's a lot of us who have security concerns and Rocket Chat is only considered because of the private hosting and encryption possibilities, vs Discord or Slack.
