webMAN Classics Maker just will not work #43

When I first used webMAN Classics Maker, I was able to make a working package launcher from one PS3 game (Brutal Legend). Since then, I have been able to make no working launchers from that game or from any PSX games. I have not tried other formats (PS2 or PSP). What happens is that it will ignore the PIC1.PNG and ICON0.PNG that I set, use "PS3" as the console icon, and create a launcher package that-- when I run it-- gives an error on the PS3 and does not load the game. So webMAN Classics Maker's launchers are not functioning for me in any way. Windows 8 compatibility mode did not help either. The preview that is generated is attached here.

It was so frustrating to me that I thought my PS3 was messed up. So I formatted my HDD and reinstalled HEN, webMAN MOD, and webMAN Classics Maker. I did nothing else but upload a PSX game (Chrono Cross). It still does not work, exhibiting all the exact same problems.

Please help me, as my strategy for staying organized depends on webMAN Classics Maker. Thank you.

Hi Charles. I'm so sorry to hear that this caused you problems. When you make your wmc PKGs are you using the ftp feature or are you making them manually? Even though I have very little time right now due to real life stuff I'll try my best to find a solution for you.

I have been using the FTP feature, the one that has us use the IP address. I never saw another option! O: Oh wait, did you mean auto-installing packages? I tried doing that, and I tried not doing that. Neither worked.

I would also like to say that I downloaded PSX2PS3, and it gave me the same problems. I also tried following this guide, section Seven, to no avail: https://www.psx-place.com/threads/tutorial-ps3hen-the-great-ps3-hen-all-in-one-guide.24369/

Same basic problems each time. I suspect they are all based on the same operations and/or software?

Further information: I am running Windows 10. I have removed spaces in every file name and directory possible, launched from the root of a drive to remove more spaces, and ran webMAN Classics Maker in Windows 8 compatibility mode. I have tinkered a lot besides. Nothing has worked so far.

And thanks so very much for your response!

This is interesting.

  1. What model of PS3 do you have?
  2. and what firmware version are you running at the moment?
  3. Do no PS2 games work from disc or installed and used to at an earlier stage?

Since none of your attempts worked for running PS2 games it almost sounds like you might have a damaged/wrongly configured PS2 EMU software stored on in the flash. Excuse any misconceptions, it's early here :)

  1. PS3 Super Slim
  2. 4.88 HFW (PS3HEN)
  3. PS2 games and their launchers ran fine. I used a completely different launcher maker just for PS2 games-- PS2 Classics GUI, recommended by Mr. Mario here: https://youtu.be/Syy6HyJo8pQ

It's PSX games that I couldn't create a launcher for, though I could run them normally. I also once made a PS3-game backup launcher of Brutal Legend using webMAN Classics Maker, and that worked. However, I was never able to make it work again later. Because of these things, I presume it's not PS2 emulator software that's damaged. Especially since I didn't try to use webMAN Classics Creator for PS2... yet. Just PSX and PS3.

Also, can you verify that you can actually create a proper Classics launcher for a PSX game using webMAN Classics Maker? One that launches a PSX game and has a custom PIC1.PNG and ICON0.PNG. Because I'm not even totally sure the program works for anyone anymore, in 2022.

Edit/Update: Oh yeah! Just to be super clear, the non-WCM programs never worked properly to create packages either. They basically create them on my PC, using ISOs on my PC, where the PS3 was never a factor; but they don't work. PSX2PS3 and the other one (I forget what it's called) gave me the exact same problems as webMAN Classics Creator: no updated ICON0.PNG, no updated PIC1.PNG, and an installable package that installs a broken launcher. So it's not my PS3's fault!

I appreciate the detailed reply. So to digest the info you got for me:

That sounds like I might have broken PSX compatibility somewhere along the way.

To replicate the problem: It sounds any PSX game ISO placed in the PSXISO folder will give these errors when trying to build a WCM luncher.

The bad news: My dear and only US imported PS3 CECHA YLOD on me some months back, so I have nothing to test on :( The good news: If I'm lucky I only need to replace the NEC Tokin capacitors for the RSX to get it up and running again, this is definitely on my TODO-list

Maybe you could upload a compressed file containing the build folder files for one of your failed builds and I can at least take a close look at them?

* WCM PS2 PKGs seem to work fine

No no, I have not verified whether WCM works for PS2 packages or not. I did not use WCM for PS2 packages, I used PS2 Classics GUI-- the only one of these, like, four "classics launcher-maker" programs that worked. Since PSX and PS3 games didn't work in WCM, I can only assume that PS2 and PSP ones won't work in WCM either.

What I do know is that WCM doesn't work for either PSX or PS3. It worked for PS3 once, and never again.

What is also interesting is that for said PS3 game's WCM installed launcher, if you highlighted the game, the ICON0.PNG turned into the video that plays when you use a disc. So I'm not sure what's going on there, but it was nice.

Of course, when I tried to build a new one later, as I said, it failed in the same ways that the PSX games did. I tried several times.

Maybe you could upload a compressed file containing the build folder files for one of your failed builds and I can at least take a close look at them?

Sure, and I'll screenshot every step while I'm at it. Do you want me to package a real PS1 ISO, or...? Final Fantasy V (Anthology) is only 240mb, and I own that one.

Update: Do you have a Patreon?

Today I started working on a video to show what happens. Tomorrow I will finish and upload it.

Alright, so making the video has been pretty annoying. I'll just say this:

Once again, even if I were to get the installed launcher working properly without going back to the XMB to select the ISO, the correct .PNGs (ICON0.PNG and PIC1.PNG) never show up, neither in the preview nor on the PS3. This basically defeats the purpose of webMAN Classics Launcher, which is to make the games entries on the XMB look nice.
