Fix msvc compiler warnings #16

Fix compiler warnings on MSVC. Work around the snappy bug.

There are no more warnings except No standard charset converter defined for WIN32 - disabling conversion

I added an explanatory sentence to one of the commit messages.

BTW: I don't know if it was a deliberate choice, but you don't need to close the pull request, and create a new one. If you push (push -f, to force) the changed commits to the existing branch, the existing pull request gets updated automatically (or at least, it should).
